The Prison Yoga Project (PYP), in collaboration with Three Jewels Tucson and the Tucson Mindfulness Practice Community, is offering a special training for yoga teachers interested in working with at-risk populations including the incarcerated. James Fox, founder and director of the Prison Yoga Project, will lead a two-day training drawing on his experience of teaching yoga and mindfulness meditation to incarcerated youth and adults, including nine years at San Quentin Prison. The weekend is intended for anyone interested in bringing yoga to underserved and/or traumatized populations. It will include:

  • PYP’s methodology for working with prisoners including an in depth orientation for teaching yoga in the unique social/cultural environment of prison

  • Discussion of the research and supported benefits of yoga for emotional and psychological issues

  • Strategies for establishing yoga programs in detention centers and rehabilitation facilities

  • Instruction in specific asana, pranayama and meditation practices that have been proven effective with prisoners

Incarcerated Teens and Adults - James Fox & Mary Lynn Fitton

 Title: “Yoga on the Inside: Introducing the benefits of mindfulness-based practices to incarcerated teens and adults.”

Description:

Prison Yoga Project founder James Fox and Mary Lynn Fitton, founder of The Art of Yoga Project offer their best practices for teaching incarcerated teens and adults. Participants will gain an understanding of the common psycho-physiological profile of this specialized population and how to engage with the associated challenges in working with even the most resistant students toward transforming ingrained patterns of thinking and behavior.Hands-on instruction in specific asana, pranayama and meditation practices that have proven effective with prisoners will be shared.

Title:  “Yoga Behind Bars: Challenges and Opportunities”

Description:

The Art of Yoga Project founder Mary Lynn Fitton and James Fox, founder of Prison Yoga Project discuss the challenges of teaching mindfulness practices in an institutional, prison setting. Along with strategies and rationale for establishing yoga programs in detention and rehabilitation facilities, practical information about interacting with prison staff in their unique social and cultural environment will be shared. As part of a discussion concerning the continuum of the current justice system, participants will explore approaches for effective collaboration with detention facility partners such as prison administration, probation, judiciary, mental health, and other service providers.
